ABOUT THE SEMINAR

The research that will be presented examines how economic shocks in traditional energy sectors can accelerate the transition to cleaner technologies. The study combines theoretical modeling with empirical analysis of a major economic event in the energy sector. The authors exploit a major oil price shock in 2014 and propose a novel method of identifying firms’ exposure to variations in the oil price. They find that companies more exposed to the shock subsequently increased their investments in clean technology R&D compared to less exposed firms. This work offers insights into the dynamics driving technological shifts in energy systems, potentially informing policies aimed at promoting sustainable economic development and accelerating the transition to cleaner energy technologies.
